As Congress Applauded Trump for Call for Unity, Pelosi Stayed Firm in Her Seat Without One Clap

While most people applauded President Donald Trump’s call for unity during his State of the Union address, Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) remained firm in her seat.

Within the first few minutes of his speech, Trump recognized House Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R-La.) and praised the amount of unity Democrats and Republicans showed in the wake of the congressional baseball shooting.
“In the aftermath of that terrible shooting, we came together, not as Republicans or Democrats, but as representatives of the people,” he said.
However, Trump noted that while the behavior exhibited during that time was superb, it should not be the exception in Washington, D.C., but the norm. He explained that “it is not enough to come together only in times of tragedy” and made a direct plea to the people in the room.
“Tonight, I call upon all of us to set aside our differences, to seek out common ground, and to summon the unity we need to deliver for the people — this is really the key — these were the people we were elected to serve,” the president declared.
While most of the people in the room offered resounding agreement with their applause, Pelosi remained in her seat and stared stoically ahead.
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.), who has had his own bouts of disagreement with Trump joined in on the applause and even appeared to sneak a glance at Pelosi and surveyed the room.
Given the speech is generally about the president’s agenda, it’s understandable that at times, not everyone would be championing his ideas.
However, unlike some of her colleagues, it seems, for Pelosi, not even a call for unity can bridge the divide between her and the president.
House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) has ordered House Democrats to stay in their seats during President Donald Trump’s first State of the Union address.
Politico reports that Pelosi gave Democrats the order Tuesday morning at a closed-door meeting about what their official response to Trump’s speech should be while the cameras are on them.
The order included not coming if they were planning to get up and walk out, according to the report.
Pelosi reportedly said:
Let the attention be on his slobbering self. If you want to walk out, don’t come in.
But she suggested expectations for Trump were low and had a prediction regarding the success of the president’s first official State of the Union address.
Pelosi said:
If his nose isn’t running and he isn’t burping, he did a great speech.
About a dozen representatives plan to boycott the speech. Others plan to bring guests who are in the country illegally. Several celebrities recently held their own alternative State of the Union. Rep. Maxine Waters (D-Calif.) plans to give her response to the speech on BET. However, the official Democratic response will be given by Rep. Joe Kennedy III (D-Mass.).
